Author's notes

Is it Cladia corallaizon or is it Cladia retipora? Difficult to tell apparently. I have pasted this comment from: ....... https://canberra.naturemapr.org/Sightings/2459158 ... "If you look at the key to the species (in Flora of Australia, vol. 54) you are asked to look inside the hollow stems at what is called the inner medulla (is it compact or stranded)? A good hand lens may tell you which but the photos don't." .... Next time I visit, I'll bring back a specimen. ........ Found on a rhyolite outcrop growing over a moss bed.

It was very abundant on the south-facing end of the outcrop, but absent elsewhere. The moss beds seemed quite moist and the lichen was nicely hydrated. The 3rd photo doesn't really do justice to its density there - practically a carpet of it.

Looks like C. retipora to me because if you look at the tips of the branches there is obvious 'blackening' as mentioned in the description on p. 106 Vol 54 Flora of Aust. and what I've seen with other examples.

By the way the blackening only looks like little dots on the tips of the branches.

Hi Pam, I'm happy to go with Cladia retipora. Apart from the discussion at ......
https://canberra.naturemapr.org/Sightings/2459158 ...................................
I have found very little by way of photos and information on Cladia corallaizon whereas there are plenty of images of Cladia retipora (black tips and all) with white to light grey colour, looking similar to mine. ..... Refer: .... https://natlib.govt.nz/records/22465591 .......... and ........

Thanks for those links Max. I checked them out, couldn't get the NZ one. The first one, canberra. naturemapr one that showed black tips for C. corallaizon. All I can say is that I have to go by the published description in Vol. 54 of Flora of Australia that had black tips for C. retipora and not in the description for C. corallaizon!!? The third link showed black tips in the top right and top left, though not clear. If I come across anything more or better descriptive notes or images I'll let you know. Still unable to add new species for you sorry.
