Author's notes

not sure what this fungus was growing on, possibly a very old rotted tree stump I have now added a couple of images taken several days later showing the aging of the fungus and also its underside which is not gilled but sort of spiky.

I'm not sure either!! It looks like it could be an immature polypore. Is there any chance that you can take another look at it in the next few weeks please? Just to see if it is developing any more definite characteristics and if any pores become visible on the undersurface.

I will do that as I walk that way often. I could take a knife and cut a section as it is so big

If you do that please be very careful not to cut yourself as some of these are very tough.

Thanks for that Libby. Did you happen to notice if the old stump it was growing on was a pine species? Are there pines in the general location?

No I couldn't identify it, but in that location it could possibly have been a Norfolk Island pine?

I'm not 100% sure of this one, though all the indicators are pointing to this species.

It certainly looks like the images on the web. We don't have a picture in our species list so if you are happy I will add these for now?

That'd be great. Thanks Libby. I should live dangerously and confirm this - what do you think?
