It looks like an adult male. The orange coloration is not their normal colouration, but rather caused by iron oxide bacteria in the water somewhere nearby.

Max, do any of the creeks in the vicinity of where this animal was seen, have an orange-brown slime on the bottom and/or edges of the water?

Hi Patrick - From memory, I saw the dragon run off the Alsops creek bridge as we approached. It is a concrete bridge with a low steel rail on the edge beams. It doesn't drain well and had muddy puddles along the bed of the bridge that day after rain. Our first thought was that it had gotten itself very muddy in the puddles, but when I checked the photos, I knew that wasn't right. The next theory was that it was a female or juvenile, as the Swanson field guide says "Juveniles and females are more or less uniform greenish brown. Undersurface is pale brown." I have a juvenile sighting from the Bemboka River which fits that description: Dragon Intellagama lesueurii howitti (Gippsland Water Dragon) on 2 Oct 2017 As you say however, this animal has an orange cast, so I'll check out the vicinity of Alsops creek bridge next time I'm going past for iron oxide bacterial slime and get back to you.
