Author's notes

Imperial Hairstreak larvae on young Acacia mearnsii. "Attended", somewhat surprisingly I think, by ant Camponotus suffusus

Are they looking after it or doing something nasty?
   23 Feb 2019
Hi Libby - The caterpillars looked relaxed and the ants appeared to be stroking their abdomens.

sounds as if they were all having a good time!

Hi Libby - Went back today for another look. The two larger caterpillars had disappeared. One of the remaining smaller ones seemed to be in trouble (photo 3 added) and the other was moving fast and bobbing it's head end in response to contact with the ants. (photo 4 added

maybe not so friendly then. Let's hope someone who knows about this kind of behaviour can shed some light on what's going on here.

Hi Max and Libby. This is a very interesting record Max! As far as I'm aware Jalmenus evagoras is only attended by Iridomyrmex species of ants. I know Camponotus are known to attend some Ogyris butterflies though. Have you observed this colony for many years, or only noticed it this year?

Hi Suzi, I wouldn't call it a colony, as it was 4 larvae when we first saw it a few days ago, the down to 2 the day before yesterday. They are on a very small A. mearnsii plant only c. 30cm high and had eaten a fair bit of it. There were no Iridomyrmex in sight. Initially we thought the Camponotus were tending them, but on the 2nd visit it looked more like the interaction could be less positive. One of the remaining larvae was hanging off the stem at an angle, not sure it it was in trouble or getting ready to pupate. It had a dark area on the underside. Don't know where the two lost larvae had got to. They had not pupated on the plant, so maybe the Camponotus had eaten them? However, the ant interaction with the remaining larvae didn't look outright predatory. We've since seen 2 or 3 more small colonies attended by the usual small black ants, I assume Iridomyrmex. Jackie

Hi again Suzi, We've been back for another look and there are now no Jalmenus larvae on the plant, so I think we have to assume they got eaten, despite the interaction with the Camponotus never looking outright predatory while we were watching. There was a lot of sniffing and stroking going on, along the lines of "is this edible, and would it put up much of a fight if I tried to drag it off?" The less damaged looking of the two larvae was reacting to being touched by the ants by jerking its head upwards slightly. Today the ants (6 or so) were still present running around on the wattle, so maybe there was some residual Jalmenus smell they were trying to track down.
