Author's notes

Friends awoke to a ruckus this morning, and discovered this Barn Owl creating much excitement in their chicken house. The owl was being assaulted by the chooks, but once they were ushered away, it relaxed - and provided us all with a great chance to see one of these secretive nocturnal birds up close. The Barn Owl can be distinguished from the Australian Masked Owl by: shorter leg feathers; brown on the side of the head (not white); brown rim to facial disc (no darker 'brow' region). I believe this is a female, based on the extensive brown colouring to the upper parts.

Thanks Aaron. A lucky morning, all thanks to a phone call from friends - with chickens!

What a gorgeous bird. They don't seem to get detected very often (I've only ever glimpsed a couple in the headlights) - not as vocal as the Ninox owls and less prone to roosting in trees in the open during the day. I don't know where they do roost though - surely not all in barns! I see you've got the images in the ID pages already, bravo.
