Author's notes

We have trapped 1 adult and 3 juveniles near our house over several days and released them 2km away at Watergums Creek. We assume this photo is a juvenile Rattus fuscipes based protruding eyes, large, rounded ears and relative tail/body length.

Not so convinced about this ID Paul. The tail looks long enough for it to be Rattus rattus (more than head/body length) - can't really tell from these photos. Also the ear looks quite long. I think fuscipes and rattus are very hard to tell apart from photos. We have Rattus rattus here, hanging around the house area.

Thanks Jackie. I agree that the tail in this guy does look marginally longer than the body length. In the photos of Rattus rattus adults on the ALA the tail is noticeably longer than the body. But the same may not hold for juveniles, I guess. So let’s keep it unconfirmed. We do have previous images of adults we’ve trapped in the same location. I may post one of those.

Hi Jackie. My older photos of Rattus sp. are not really useful for ID purposes, But we did find a dead baby rat in the garden yesterday. I’ll post some pictures of it separately. The tail is pretty much the same length as the body. May be a different species to this one of course, but let me know what you think about it. Thanks, Paul
