Hi Max - Although I can't be sure, this looks rather like a Lassioglossum sp., (family Halictidae). I'm basing this on the fact that it seems to be carrying pollen mostly on the femur, with a lesser amount on the tibia. And the general body shape and size.

Hi Kerry - Can you recommend an online (or book) resource for Australian native bee ID? I agree that family Halictidae seems most likely for all the reasons you've stated, but after a lengthy session on line I can't seem to penetrate any further than speculation.

From all I've read, truly accurate ID to the species level requires a specimen, microscope, and lots of experience. But I do think that for many of our species we can probably get to family and even genus level with some degree of confidence. I've been using a combination of some tips Ken Walker published in a Bowerbird newsletter, the Bowerbird 'native bees' project sightings and comments, and ALA images. And I've been recording my musings and progress in our Life in a Southern Forest blog posts. In particular, you might like to look at:

and also the latest post:

I give links to Ken's newsletter there.
Cheers, and happy bee-watching!

Thanks Kerri, the links you gave are great. This bee does indeed look like the Lasioglossum spp. that bee experts (not me) have identified on Canberra Nature Map, so I've suggested that.
