Hi Liz, If you want Patersonias identified to species you need to take a whole of plant shot. Surprisingly the flower is not all that helpful. P. glabrata has a longer stem that tends to trail over the ground a bit with leaves towards the tip, while sericea is more compact. And they both tend to grow with Lepidosperma concavum, which has really similar leaves, so it can all be a bit tricky. You need to tease out which leaves are actually attached to the purple flag flower and get them in the shot! Better luck next time.
