Author's notes

We saw an unusual insect in our house just prior to Christmas. It looked like some kind of wasp (or potentially a fly) but had a very unusually small abdomen, compared to the rest of its body. The abdomen twitched up and down while the insect was stationary. It had bright green eyes and long rear legs. I've never seen an insect like this before and am curious if anyone can help identify it. I released it outside and didn't keep it. Thanks.

wow. It looks a bit like a dupe wasp but I've never seen a black one before!

I don’t think it was a Dupe Wasp as it didn’t have a stinger.
