Hi Kim, Did this critter subsequently get ID'd by you as Scutigera coleoptera? I lost the thread a bit. If so, can you re-ID the sighting so the photo becomes available for uploading into that species slot in the ID pages, not just in Scutigeridae?
Hi Jackie, I did leave a comment that it looked more like the native Allothereua maculata than the introduced 'House centipede' Scutigera coleoptrata, but for some reason the comment didn't appear. But I don't know these creatures well enough to be sure of a species identification.
Hi Kim, Yep, well forget the links in future then. I can google the name anyway. Checked images for both and they do look awfully similar. In fact it appeared in one case the same image was coming up under both names! So we'll have to leave it undetermined I guess. But Allothereua is in Scutigeridae hey, so I can stick the photo up for that in the ID pages?
Max has a lot of fun tweaking the images to get them nice and bright and sharp. I tend to just put my plant shots and fungi shots in as they come out of the camera, but he likes to play first.
I used this key to identify this one to species level http://www.ento.csiro.au/biology/centipedes/key1.html However, I note a statement at the beginning of the Scutigeromorpha part that this taxon is in need of revision. So it might be prudent to leave it at Scutigeridae.
I note that this one looks much more like the images of Allothereua maculata on ALA than my suggestion of Thereuopoda longicornis. So it seems like my keying out was defective in any event.
