Author's notes

This species is a post-fire ephemeral. I have seen it as abundant as this (closer to 10,000 than 1,000 plants) on this site in 2014 after a hazard reduction burn of low-mod intensity. This was a much hotter fire and has promoted as much or more germination. There were the dead remains of a previous generation of plants also present. I assume they were not from 2014, as that cohort would have been consumed by the 2018 fire, so perhaps they germinated soon after the fire and died at the end of the summer, to be replaced by another generation germinating in late summer and flowering now in the following spring. The 4th photo shows a seedling carrying a few flowers, which I have also observed previously here. This species doesn't muck around when it comes to producing seed as quickly as possible, and with some justification considering the dry rocky habitat it seems to favour.
