There is not enough detail visible to assign Rutilia sp or Amenia sp. (nr. chrysame). I'm not sure how we should deal with this in the classification system: this specimen is not going to be anything other than Rutilia or Amenia, yet these genera are in different families.

Well, given that they are not great photos, I could just delete the sighting. That's the easy solution, and what I usually do with plants that no-one will ever be able to ID.

I mean, it may be the case that some time in the future, I realise that there's a character which helps differentiate this particular specimen - I think is still important to keep the record, the main problem is with fitting it into the framework of this site

how about this James? I've just created a superfamily endpoint OESTROIDEA.

Ok, had a think about this: its can't be Rutilia - it's a male Amenia chrysame. There's a distinct row of setae on T3 - this excludes all similarly coloured Rutilia spp.. The frons is narrowed (but not obliterated) to the vertex and the postorbits are white - which indicates A. chrysame. The metallic colouration visible on T3 also appears to be divided by a darker area down the mid-line: this is typically seen in some Rutilia, where there's discrete 'blocks' of colour against a dark background, however this feature can also be present in certain specimens A. chrysame, where the bright-dark colour contrast is less extreme. I'd assume that if there was slightly more exposure/DR in the photo, and there was a direct dorsal view of the abdomen, we'd see this dark mid-line blend into the blocks of colour either side of it. We'd also see for sure if there's white spots on the postalar calli, which is the main source of difficulty here (given that I think it's an Amenia and not a Rutilia, I'm assuming that these are indeed present).

How do I add this sighting to the field guide entry for A. chrysame?
   11 Mar 2019
You use “define images”. I’m happy to do that for you James.

Thanks guys. I've just changed the caption in the ID guide to Bega Swamp instead of Bemboka. Bloody annoying the way google earth keeps calling places on top of the escarpment Bemboka. It manages to call some locations with no town nearby Ben Boyd NP, so why can't it manage Wadbilliga for this spot?
