Author's notes

Feeding on fireweed in mixed native/exotic pasture (I don't know what insects did before fireweed arrived here; they frequently perch and I assume feed on it). I see the larval food plant for this species is Oxalis and there is plenty of this plant around in the vicinity. The alternating brown and white patches round the wing margins seem to definitely indicate this species (Chequered Copper).
