Nice one, Max! The following features lead me to this ID - steeply rising caput, eyes positioned in a compact arrangement, relatively long legs, massive chelicerae, no apophysis on tibia II, tibia I and metatarsus I not thickened.

Also spinnerets project beyond end of abdomen (albeit somewhat obscured by stick).

Hi Paul - Thanks for finding the time for this one. I know you have been busy. I had followed through from your description and specimens of H. nimoola in the species list and thought that's probably what we had, but I was foxed finally, into indecision, by the long silky looking hairs on legs and chelicerae which seemed untypical.
   25 Nov 2018
Hi Max - your indecision was justified! I had overlooked those long, fine hairs. Checking the SEM images of the various Hadronyche species in the Gray 2010 paper, I see that a dense covering of long, fine hairs on the distal leg segments is indeed a feature of several Hadronyche species, but not H. nimoola. It's not listed as a diagnostic feature and the features used to decide between those other species cannot be seen in your images. So I think it would be safest to leave this one as Hadronyche sp. Based on location, H. cerberea would be the most likely option.

Hi Max. We've been revisiting our IDs of the funnel web spiders in the light of a recent sighting of a female by Andrew McCutcheon (4260765). I had not properly appreciated the difficulty in separating females of Atrax and Hadronyche before. If you have a side on view of the spider, it's clear - Hadronyche spp. have a steeply rising caput, whereas Atrax spp. have a shallow rise. But this is only clear if the photo is taken from exactly side on. On looking at your photos, I'm now not convinced your spider is a Hadronyche sp. It could be an Atrax sp. Another Atrax vs. Hadronyche female difference is the length of the tip segment of the longest pair of spinnerets. In Atrax they are finger shaped whereas in Hadronyche nimoola and Hadronyche cerberea they are roughly triangular. Unfortunately, the stick in your photo #1 obscures the spinnerets, so I can't use that feature. Finally, the cephalothorax in female Atrax spp. is longer (relative to width) than in Hadronyche. But you need a photo from directly above the spider to judge that. So I think we might have to put this back to family level (i.e. Atracidae)

Hi Paul, Have you got the Whyte and Anderson field guide - Spiders of Australia. If so have a look at the Hadronyche cerbera (Southern Tree Funnelweb) photo on page 390. If not, Google Hadronyche cerbera and "A field guide to spiders of australia - page 390 - Google books result" will come up about three results down. That takes you to the photo. If you compare that image with my sighting photo 1 (they are quite similarly posed) you may find, as I did, that measure for measure and bump for bump, they are compellingly similar. As you mention, in your third comment above, she is similarly hirsute and likely on distribution. I can even offer a theory as to why she is out of her (ahem) tree. My photo 1 finds her on the disturbed ground of a recently bull dozed fire break. The operator did his best for us, but there was considerable disturbance to nearby trees and shrubs. I think her burrow may have been compromised. Well Paul, that's my pitch for taking her up to species, but I'll be happy with Atracidae if your not convinced.

Hi Max, I’ve now compared your spider to the photo of H. ceberea in Whyte and Anderson (they’ve misspelt the species epithet), the SEM images in the Gray, 2010 paper of H. ceberea and Atrax sutherlandi and the two sightings of Atrax sutherlandi on NatureMapr. So I’m now pretty confident that you have indeed got Hadronyche cerberea - mainly based on the long hairs on the distal leg segments. Another feature which speaks to a Hadronyche species, which isn’t stated in the Gray 2010 paper but which stands out pretty well after looking at lots of Atracidae images, is the colour of the pleura (the unsclerotised cuticle joining the carapace to the sternum). In Hadronyche spp (at least the ones we’ve looked at) the pleura is whitish-grey whereas in Atrax it’s darker. The clincher is the shape of the caput and your photo 1 is consistent with a steeply rising caput, even though it’s not definitive. So all that combined with your likely habitat of a tree means I’m happy to elevate this one to Hadronyche cerberea. Sorry for the long-winded reply!

Hi Paul, No problem with the detailed reply. I shall know better what to look for next time I'm getting ID photos of Atracinae and then how to interpret the details.
