Hi Liz, If it's a sparrowhawk it should be fairly small. One of my bird books has it as about the same weight as a black-faced cuckoo-shrike or a little heavier, while the brown goshawk is about the same or heavier than a magpie. I can't see any of the other diagnostic features in your photo - square tail, something to do with the feet or the shape of the forehead, so there is nothing to go on but size.
