Author's notes

These were a bit past it (we've had no rain worth mentioning for 2 weeks or so). The smallest one had some black gunk on the litter under it, and when I pulled the cap off only the outer skin was left, the flesh and pores having deliquesced. We find this species fairly often in our forested areas, usually late summer/autumn I think.

Definitely Boletellus - emodensis there's not enough detail to confirm. Can't tell if it lacked a marginal veil. In the key, pileus red, fine scales etc. B. enmodensis - this is where I can't see stipe. Pileus with coarse scales associated with red pigments - choices B. disiliens, no; B.ananiceps, possible; B. deceptivus, highly probably. If you cut B. emodensis in half yellow flesh quickly turns blue in pileus .(cap) and stipe (stem), though the lower section, base of the stipe will have brownish tones.

Damn. I thought I was on a sure thing there. I'll put up some of our earlier photos in hopes they'll be better for ID (but not now).

Hi again Pam. I discovered I had already put up one B. emodensis sighting from our place which Teresa had confirmed: Fungus Boletellus emodensis (Boletellus emodensis) on 17 Mar 2007 So, if that one is correct it's fairly likely this one is also emodensis. I suppose it is possible we have two very similar species present, but the simpler explanation is that they are all the same thing.

PS And Max had put up this one, also from our place: Fungus Bolete sp. (Bolete sp.) on 26 Mar 2017

It's definitely a Boletellus rather than a 'Bolete' sp. It can be really difficult to separate some of these Boletellus from photos. Even Roy Halling from New York Botanic Gardens a world expert on Boletaceae finds it difficult and many times impossible to give a definitive id on some of these! So please be patient with me.......!!

OK, I'll confirm it as Boletellus sp and try and lift my game with future sightings, thanks.
