What at lovely find and great diagnositc photos. Will try and chase down a species name - but no promises! Entolomas come from the most fragile, delicate of species to quite large robust species. Genevieve gate once said, they are the great mimics. Looking like many other genera of fungi

Hi Pam, Yeah, we felt a bit guilty about busting the poor thing up like that, but cheered up a bit when we noticed there were another couple hiding in the grass nearby. Checked our books and none of the Entolomas in them look like good contenders. Jackie

So far I've narrowed it down to either Entoloma panniculum (first Entoloma ever described from the Australasian region!) or E. coeruleomagnum. I feel more confident with the latter because of the yellowing in the stipe (stem). Gen. Gates' photo I've seen of this appears to be on an aged specimen. But you may be able to search these two and see which you feel is closest to the specimen you found. Let me know. By the way what size was it?
   16 Feb 2019
Hi Pam, panniculum (or panniculus? Spelling varied in on-line sources) looks to have too thin and too dark blue a stipe in the images I found, and I couldn't actually find any images claiming to be the other one, just lots of general Entoloma images (other than the Gen Gates image you mention, which does look old). On size, 60-70mm across and about the same for height, maybe a bit less.

Sorry about the spelling - should be panniculus - anyway the cap of yours is too large for this sp.. The pileus on E. coeruleomagnum is '100 mm broad, irregularly convex. Stipe 60 x 8-10 mm, yellowing at base' Does this sound closer to your specimen? Usually found in rainforests!!? Or do you have a new species?

Hi Pam - The mushrooms odour, which I forgot to mention, was like a field mushroom

I found this site:

https://www.revolvy.com/page/Entoloma-haastii

Entoloma-haastii certainly looks a good match, however " it is known only from New Zealand, where it grows on the ground in leaf litter, usually near Nothofagus species."
   17 Feb 2019
Sorry Pam - I've edited my odour comment back to standard field mushroom. I was confused with another (yet to post). taken the same day.

My advice would be to forward copies of your photos and other data to Genevieve Gates as she is the Australian expert on Entolomataceae. I'll contact her and see if it's OK with her.
   17 Feb 2019
Hi Pam, Yeah, usually found in rainforests doesn't sound too good for our thing, which was in shady grassland with tree wattles (ie regrowth after old clearing of euc forest). Yeah, forwarding to Genevieve sounds good, if you want to message me or Max with her email address, or just send her the URL for this sighting. But we can forward higher res photos to her if that might help.

Max below is the reply I've had from Genevieve "Hello Pam, the habitat sounds correct which is interesting. have you any photos of spores and the pileipellis of mine is very distinctive-it is a TRICHODERM with pileocystidia!!! other wise it could be any number of large blue Entolomas found by Dave Largent and Peter.

all the best

Genevieve"

So if it's possible to take Paul Whitington up on his offer to look at the spores that might be a start. Otherwise I think it may have to just stay as Entoloma sp.!
   17 Feb 2019
Nope, not going to happen with the spores as Paul is away this week. Fancy that, a trichoderm with pileocystidia. I deduce from the 3 !!! that it's exciting, but double dutch to me. Interesting to know that there are any number of large blue Entolomas - where are all the images on the web? I didn't really see much that was even a little bit similar. Better leave it as "sp." for now. Jackie

The solution is if some participants can learn to dry specimens, then package them up with all your field and other data you've collected and forward them to DAR our state fungal herbarium at Orange where Michael Priest can look at them. Two things would result from this, firstly; a verified positive identification is made - and how exciting if you are come across a new species! This makes the data being lodged with the ALA more rigorous. Secondly; the process would help build the depth and breadth of, not only our collection, but more importantly the knowledge and distribution of fungi in the state. I've seen some interesting species come across my screen
   17 Feb 2019
OK, not going to happen this time as we broke the fruiting body up and the other two were old, but we'll keep an eye on that area for more. Does drying them require special equipment? I can imagine the fleshier ones just going rotten.

I do mine in a food dryer. My husband, Jim, saw them for sale at Aldi last year for a very low price, I thought it was $40! Though mine is a NZ one I've had for years. Maybe if you look around you can see something. It is a matter of air drying them with some warmth - if they are thick cut them in half or with some of the boletes and truffles they have to be sliced a couple of times. The important thing though is once the specimen is dry is to keep it dry!! I do this by putting the dried specimen in a zip lock bag as I take it off the dryer.
