Significant sighting

KerriLee noted:
  12 Feb 2019

This is a rare species, and there are currently no photos or records on ALA.

Author's notes

This large beetle caught my attention as it circled about in flight, loudly buzzing. It then landed at the base of a dead, standing eucalypt ... and immediately began to burrow into the moist leaf litter and soil. I dug it out to photograph, and it repeatedly crawled back to the same spot, and burrowed.

Subfamily Cetoniinae (flower chafers). I've yet to find a species match for the colour/pattern, although it is quite similar to species in the genus Lyraphora

Kerri, it might be Chondropyga olliffiana, which is quite rare. I can't find any images online to confirm it, but Roger photographed one a couple of years ago and might still have his images.

Thanks Kim ... I'll ask Roger. I thought it might be an exciting find, when I couldn't find any images like it on ALA. I did go back an hour after taking these shots and dug around, but couldn't find it, even though I dug down about 15cm. I'll keep an eye out for more ... but I've never seen one before, so chances are slim of seeing another.

It matches a figure in W.W. Froggatt's 1907 'Australian insects' of what was then called Diaphonia olliffiana. He says it 'is a very rare species about the same size [as the common Chondropyga dorsalis]...All the specimens known, about half dozen in number, come from the same locality, Colo Vale, NSW, and nothing is known about their habits'. Apart from this record and Roger's, I have seen a pair from Mount Kaputar, so it appears to be actually quite widespread.

Thanks again Kim ... this is quite exciting! And I'm confident they're breeding here, given that this one was determinedly burrowing. I think this qualifies as a 'significant sighting' (?)

I'd say any sighting of this species is significant!
