Hi Steve, Don't think I can get this one for sure on just photos, but I'd be a bit inclined to think Carex gaudichaudiana if it had a running habit (i.e. forming a bit of an open sward) rather than clumping (tussocky). I've removed the ID shots I had of Carex polyantha (which looked quite like your photos) and replaced them with something I saw recently in the Bemboka River - a big chunky tussock with drooping flower heads. I think my earlier "polyantha" shots were misidentified. I've had the Sydney RBG identify a huge tussock from below Tantagara Dam wall as polyantha, so I think I've got the hang of what it looks like now with the Bemboka River tussocky thing.

Yes wasn’t sure happy to get to the genus with these anyway. It was growing in amongst the rocks along the creek most probably had the running habit as it appeared to be a number of individuals clumped together

I think with a closer look I can say it is gaudichaudiana - the dark red-brown glume with a paler midrib that species is supposed to have certainly fits with your first photo (though polyantha also has that feature, and probably others). Your description sounds like gaudichaudiana typical habit.
