Author's notes

Spotted this dolphin pod swimming parallel and about 50m out. I was able to follow along Middle Beach and capture some photos. The pod seems to include young.

In the second photo with a bit of face out of the water, the beak looks short and stubby. Also the base of the fin is relatively broad. According to my mammals field guide this would make it Bottlenose Dolphin, not Common. But I'm afraid I'm not confident enough to confirm that.

This is most likely to be a Bottlenose Dolphin...Tursiops aduncas are the inshore Bottlenose Dolphins....shown from DNA research along the East coast .

Hi Liz, My mammals field guide only shows aduncas coming down the east coast as far as Port Macquarie. But it is an oldish edition, so that info could be out of date.

Hi Jackie, I have 'insider' information ,T.aduncas are right down to Twofold bay...Papers published by Simon Allen et al [UWA]now.....

OK, so do you want to suggest and maybe even confirm this sighting as T. aduncas?

Good on you Liz. Good to keep the unidentified lists short if possible.
