Author's notes

It looks like a Triangle barnacle (Balanus trigonus), but in Edgar, it isn't found here?

I thought it was this, but in my books it said it isn't found in this region, but I am sure I have seen them here before.

Balanus variegatus in Edgar looks similar to your image for this species, the image in Edgar for B. variegatus was taken in Merimbula. According to the ALA the accepted name is now Amphibalanus variegatus, the records for this species on the ALA are in Twofold Bay.

Thanks very much for looking into this. It is the splitting of the case and the horizontal ridges that made me think it was Balanus so it's good to get your comments. Not sure what we should do now? We need a barnacle expert. Perhaps we should see if there is one somewhere we can ask.

You could possibly send the image to the Australian Museum or the Marine Society
