Author's notes

We were atop a steep rocky ridge on a calm sunny afternoon with Leptospermum nearby in flower. It was a text book time and place to spot one of these.

Excellent record, always impressive to get any Acrodipsas sightings! Do you see this species each year? What other Acrodipsas records do you have for this site? Are there any attendant ant colonies nearby?

Hi Suzi - No previous Acrodipsas cuprea records and no ant photos from the site. This has been a consciousness raising event for this species however, so I'll keep an eye out for them and Crematogaster ants in future visits

Hi Suzi, this is a location we visit occasionally to monitor Acacia constablei (threatened species). So far I've only seen one instance where there were pupae of a blue butterfly on one plant. I assumed Jalmenus evagoras because that's what we see at home on A. mearnsii all the time. However, now we'll know to take a bit more interest. Usually A. constablei seems to be pretty free of insects, but of course there are also mearnsii in the forest nearby, though none that we pass by to get to the outcrop.

Thanks for info Max, very well done! Given it's a hilltop location you may well find other Acrodipsas fly there too. Hi Jackie - your blue butterfly pupae on a plant does sound like Jalmenus evagoras - the Acrodipsas eat ant larvae rather than plants.
