Thanks, although after checking the images on the Atlas of Living Australia it looks like N. plumipes based on the body markings and the yellow joints

Hi Steve, I checked the underside markings against a confirmed N. edulis sighting on this sight and thought it very close. On looking at N. plumipes images however, I think you might be right; I'll leave it for Kim.

Steve, Stuart Harris identified a similar-looking spider from Green Cape as N. plumipes so that backs up your ID.

Hi Kim, Max and I have looked thru our Nephila images and think some could be plumipes too, but we're not confident of the differences. Any chance you could look back through the sightings we've put in too?

Sure Jackie, I'll check them out. I'm not personally familiar with N. plumipes - I don't think it occurs here on the Tablelands - so I'll have to find out about it in the literature or online.

Jackie and Max (and Steve) - According to the Australian Museum (https://australianmuseum.net.au/golden-orb-weaving-spiders), 'the main difference between...Nephila plumipes and N. edulis (which is commoner in inland regions) is the presence of a 'knob' on the front of the sternum (the heart shaped plate on the underside of the body between the legs) of N. plumipes'. It's not possible to see the sternum clearly in any of the images in ALCW, and the other features mentioned online such as the yellow bands on the legs of N. plumipes seem too variable. The three bright yellow bands on each of the four front legs of #3372978 look distinctive, but that spider may be immature.
