Hi Liz, The backyard location suggests the plant need not be a local native, which makes it harder. The stamens are too short for it to be Kunzea ericoides, so I'm thinking it is most likely the most similar local Leptospermum, which is brevipes (has similar drooping branches and delicate non-woody fruits). But if it is planted, it could be anything!

Hi Betty, I don't think this can be K. ericoides (see my first comment above). Do you want to have another think about it? Sorry I was away for a couple of days and you got lumbered with last weekend's deluge of sightings.

Hi Jackie. It looks quite like the Leptospermum brevipes flowering in my garden at the moment. But as you say, if it is planted, it could be anything. On the other hand, the flowers appear to have lost most of their stamens, and the few that remain are the length I would expect for Kunzea ericoides. The leaves in both species are about the same length and width, so that is no help.

Hi Betty, You're right about the stamens. I had an idea Kunzea stamens were longer than Lepto stamens, but comparing these couple of photos with my shots of both species, I think I'm coming down on the side of Kunzea ericoides after all. The leaves look better for that species. L. brevipes leaves tend to be broader near the tip. I've got heaps of both on my place, so you'd think I'd have my eye in by now.
